The flagship index of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, BET, closed the trading session on Tuesday, December 28, above 13,000 points for the first time since its launch in September 1997.

The BET, which tracks the evolution of the 19 most traded stocks on the BVB, gained 6.9% in the last month alone and is expected to end the year with one of its best performances since its launch. The index has gained nearly 33% since the start of the year, making it one of the 10 best performing country indices in Europe in 2021, according to data from TradingEconomics.com.

Three companies in the BET index saw their shares rise by more than 100% last year: building materials producer Teraplast (+ 195%), nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica (+ 165%) and the provider of medical services Medlife (+ 135%).

The energy groups OMV Petrom (SNP) and Romgaz (SNG) and the investment fund Fondul Proprietatea (FP) also recorded above-average performances of 35 to 38% last year.

In contrast, aluminum producer Alro (ALR) was the worst performing BET in 2021 with a drop of nearly 20%. Utilities Transgaz, Transelectrica and Electrica also posted double-digit losses.
